What is Yoga?

Yoga is One of the world's most ancient and refined health systems. Developed over 5000 years ago for the improvement of physical and mental health.

Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning “union,” thus joining together the mind, body & breath. All three take an active part in the practice to nurture a deep integrated effect on the whole mental-physical structure for nurturing wellness. Correct breathing and breath awareness exercises help us to become conscious of the process of breathing and to utilize and improve the capacity of the lungs. Physical and mental relaxation is just as important as exercise. Deep yogic relaxation has a rejuvenating effect. When we are not disturbed by tension, emotions and sense impulses, the healing power of the body itself can work incredible improvements on health.

Both Hatha and Raja yoga are taught. Hatha yoga includes instruction in asanas (postures) along with breathing and relaxation techniques. Raja yoga consists of instruction in a wide variety of traditional techniques of meditation, concentration and relaxation.
